Plot Synopsis

In THE GREAT BRITISH BAKING SHOW, hosted by Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc, renowned British bakers Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood search for the UK's best amateur bakers by testing their competitors' skills on cakes, breads, pastries and desserts of all kinds, ultimately crowning a winner after 10 weeks of competition. PBS aired the U.S. premiere of this series on Sunday, December 28, 2014 at 8pm. On Sunday, September 6, 2015 at 7pm (check local listings), PBS aired the U.S. premiered of the fourth season of THE GREAT BRITISH BAKING SHOW. The season opener introduces the 13 bakers who make simple sandwich cakes in the Signature challenge, angel food cakes in Mary's Technical challenge and all things chocolate in the Showstopper. PBS aired the U.S. premiere of the fifth season of THE GREAT BRITISH BAKING SHOW -- the third season of the series to be shown in America -- on Friday, July 1, 2016 at 9pm (check local listings). The new season follows 12 amateur bakers as they don aprons and head for the tent in the British countryside, hoping to be named Britain's best. Returning judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood have created new challenges to test their baking prowess, creativity and skill, and Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc return to host another season. On Friday, June 16, 2017 from 9-11pm (check local listings), PBS aired the U.S. premiere of the sixth season of THE GREAT BRITISH BAKING SHOW, showing back-to-back new episodes. This marks the fourth season making its debut on PBS. The season opener (9pm), "Cake," introduces the 12 bakers as they tackle a back-to-basics British classic, a popular cake with a fatless sponge and tricky chocolate work. The showstopper is sophisticated and high-end. With this cake, there's nowhere to hide. Then, the night's second new episode (10pm), "Biscuits," follows the 11 remaining bakers tasked with making 24 elaborately decorated biscuits; a biscuit that requires perfect piping; and a biscuit structure that demands precision baking -- and reveals a little more about each of the contenders.

On Friday, June 22, 2018 from 9-11pm (check local listings), PBS aired the U.S. debut of the first season of THE GREAT BRITISH BAKING SHOW. After airing Seasons 3-6, PBS reached back in the archives so American audiences could enjoy the beginning of the series for the first time, with the original judges and hosts: Mary Berry, Paul Hollywood, Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc. Contestants face the demanding but endearing judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood, two icons of British baking who are now household names in America. Comedy duo Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc are the series hosts, providing the bakers with much-needed emotional support and comic relief. Offering viewers the perfect sweet summer escape, this season -- the fifth season shown in America -- features unforgettable contestants attempting some of the series most difficult challenges, from bagels to strudel, treacle tarts to choux gateaus. The new season opens with back-to-back episodes:

"Cakes" (9pm): Follow 12 bakers who tackle an upside down cake for the Signature bake. In the Technical, they undertake Paul's recipe for rum babas -- baffling some of them. For the Showstopper, they attempt to produce a cake that reveals a hidden design when sliced.

"Bread" (10pm): See how 11 bakers make 24 flatbreads for the Signature bake. The Technical challenge has them in a twist as they attempt an eight-strand plaited loaf. To stay in the tent, they must produce 12 sweet and 12 savory bagels for the Showstopper.
