Plot Synopsis

Inspired by the life of Dr. Kathy Magliato and based on her book "Heart Matters," this one-hour series follows the outspoken Alex Panttiere, one of the rare female heart-transplant surgeons, as she balances the complications of her professional and romantic lives. Stubborn and fearless, Alex always operates on her own terms. She revels in a racy personal life that's a full-time job in itself, manages the daily demands of skeptical faculty and dutiful interns, and pushes the boundaries of medical science. At the hospital she works with: Dr. Jesse Shane, the new Chief of Surgery, who had an unforgettable affair with Alex when she was an intern -- and now ten years later, they are working together; psychiatrist Dr. Hackett; obnoxious surgeon Dr. Callahan; Forester, who was left with a nasty scar and one arm by the war in Iraq; nurse Ji-Sung, who is probably the only female staff member who gets along with Alex; and Millicent. In addition to her past romance with Jesse, Alex also balances her relationships with her boyfriend, Pierce Harrison, and her ex-husband, Max. NBC originally announced that HEARTBEAT would premiere Fall 2015, airing Tuesdays at 9pm ET/PT, but the series debut was soon moved to midseason 2015-2016 to accommodate Melissa George's pregnancy. HEARTBEAT officially premiered on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at 8pm ET/PT on NBC, with a special preview episode one day earlier on Tuesday, March 22 at 9pm.

On Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at 8pm ET/PT, NBC premiered the series finale of HEARTBEAT. IN the season ender, "What Happens in Vegas ... Happens," Alex fights to save the lives of Jesse, Pierce, and Ji-Sung when a mysterious and deadly illness sends the hospital into lockdown. Meanwhile, Millicent must pick up the pieces when Alex disobeys the orders of the CDC, and an elderly man searching for his missing wife leads Alex to make a drastic decision in her love life. Guest starring Kevin Weisman, Mo Gaffney, Sara Paxton, Caitlyn Larimore, Rudy Martinez and Lenora May.
