Born in North Bergen, New Jersey, radio personalities and twins sisters Marianela "Lulu" Gonzalez & Marissa "Lala" Gonzalez were competitors in this season of CBS’s THE AMAZING RACE. Having made it through eight episodes of the race and successfully navigated the challenges of Covid travel, they showed the world what two sisters could accomplish when they have an unbreakable bond. Season 33 of THE AMAZING RACE was vastly different than any before it due to a 19-month production shutdown, and eliminated teams being allowed to come back and compete. Nevertheless, despite the challenges, Lulu and Lala made it through 8 out of the 11 legs of the race, finishing in the top five.

Recently we had the opportunity to sit down with the fan favorite sisters to talk about their experience on the race.

Question: When you found out you were going onto THE AMAZING RACE, how did it feel? What were you thinking?

Lulu: In all honesty I was in shock. I couldn’t believe we were getting this once in a lifetime opportunity.

Lala: I was so excited but knew we needed to start preparing for it ASAP which meant I needed to get rid of my fingernails. LOL! It’s a girl thing.

Question: Was it anything like you thought when you started the first part of the race?

Lala: Hell noooo! We got a rude awakening. You have the physical aspect, mental aspect and emotional aspect all going at 100 miles an hour.

Lulu: We prepared the best we could, but I don’t think you can ever really prepare for THE AMAZING RACE... One thing is seeing it on TV but living it, is completely different. There are so many levels to it.

Question: Then of course production shut down, how were you feeling at that point?

Lulu: I was devastated and cried. The race was kind of like therapy for me at the time. I was getting over a breakup and was really looking forward to traveling and bonding with the cast.

Lala: It was sad. I don’t think anyone was happy to go. We all still wanted to keep racing and I wanted to prove to myself I could do this. It was scary too because that is when we realized how serious this whole coronavirus was turning out to be.

Question: When you all got the fortunate opportunity to come back, there must have been some people you were excited to see. Tell me about some of the relationships you had built then and throughout the season.

Lulu: We were honestly really over the moon to see everyone, some more than others. But really, we couldn’t wait to hug each other and catch up.

Lala: We were all so curious to see what everyone had been up to and if all the teams would come back. Many teams went through ups and downs in the 19-month hiatus. In Scotland, when we were told production was going to stop, we were able to really connect with the other teams. I think this is one of the closest casts in AMAZING RACE history. We bonded with Raquel and Cayla because they were the only other female team. We wanted to show women are strong and supportive of one another. Kim and Penn are hilarious and very friendly. Those two are quick and clever and became like the parents of the group. In fact, we would call them mom and dad. Akbar and Sheri are from Jersey and we support Jersey all the way since we, too, are from the garden state.

Dusty and Ryan are so amazing and watching their dynamic was very entertaining to us. I think we became closest to them at one point. We kind of always ended up following each other or helping each other. Also, they are definite eye candy! We say that with all the respect in the world. Arun and Natalia reminded us of our relationship with our dad. We can talk all day about the cast, Sam and Connie, Taylor and Isaiah, Caro and Ray and Spencer and Anthony. We love them all.

Question: After so long together, there must have been some love interests? Any crushes along the way?

Lulu & Lala: We both plead the 5th on this!! In all seriousness, we are all dating each other. It’s one big, massive relationship. We all have love and respect for each other.

Question: Was it hard to compete against people who became friends?

Lulu: 100%. We love these people and want to see everyone win but there could only be one winner and you have to help yourself first. So, it was difficult.

Lala: Yes, I think when there is a connection it’s harder. You don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings. That’s why thinking about it now, it’s probably not a wise decision to allow yourself to get so close to anyone. It will have you second-guessing and can hold you back.

Question: Aside from the personal relationships, there was a lot going on. What are some of the hardest challenges you faced?

Lala: The most challenging part was not really knowing where we were. They would make us get on the plane, and wouldn’t tell us where we would be going. The flight attendants knew not to say anything. So, it was stressful figuring out what country we were in.

Lulu: Because of Covid, we weren’t allowed to use cabs, trains, buses, commercial airplanes. It was a lot of driving and using a map in a foreign country isn’t as easy as it seems. We have all been spoiled with GPS. Running with a mask was also pretty difficult. We couldn’t just run up to people, we had to be mindful and keep distance due to the pandemic.

Question: Let’s talk about the bungee jumping. The show didn’t stay on the challenge as long as I imagine it actually took to go through that part of the race. What was that like?

Lala: It was freaking high as hell. I’m not scared of heights but stepping up to it, you do get the jitters. While they are strapping you up, they are giving you instructions as to what you have to do after you jump. So, you are there trying to manage your emotions and at the same time you are trying to remember everything they are saying. It was a bit overwhelming, but I was excited. I felt very safe. Those men really made you feel at ease.

Lulu: Watching Lala jump was harder than actually jumping. She’s my twin and I was imagining the worst possible outcome. I was very happy when she was grounded to say the least.

Question: What was your favorite place to visit?

Lulu: All the counties we traveled to are spectacular, but I have to say that Switzerland really stood out to me. The culture, the people, the scenery, cleanliness, it was all so beautiful. Switzerland definitely had some good-looking men! I’m a sucker for light eyes. Lala kept telling me to focus and I think she was getting annoyed at me. I couldn’t help myself.

Lala: I was 100% annoyed. We didn’t come on the race to fall in love. We came on the race to win a million dollars. I had to remind her from time to time. Although, she’s right. Fine ass looking guys did make it hard to focus.

Question: What’s something that didn’t make it to the screen that the audience would have loved… Maybe your most embarrassing moment?

Lala: I think it would have been funny to see the women trying to use the bathroom when there was no bathroom around. Men have it so much easier. Many times, we were in the middle of nowhere and when nature called, for the women, it was like ‘Where am I supposed to pop a squat?” “Is there paper around?”

Lulu: Our epic fight in the first leg was actually so much worse. It was probably the worst fight we’ve ever had. Would have been nice to see that and laugh at it.

Question: What are some things you wish you did differently throughout the race?

Lala: I feel, especially in the last leg, we shouldn't have doubted ourselves in our direction. We should have just kept going. Perhaps be more aware of the little details and focus a little more. Not let the outside noise interfere.

Lulu: I shouldn’t have waited for Raquel back in France in the water canyon. Not trying to knock her, but at the end of the day, it was a race, and I should have just kept running. We probably would have remained in 2nd place and left in the first group in the next leg.

Question: Do you think making those changes would have put you in first place?

Lala: I think so. I mean we made it to second place once and beat Kim and Penn so it’s very possible that we could have done it again.

Question: What’s your biggest regret?

Lala: Honestly, I don’t think I have any regrets. We did our best and ran with a good heart. I enjoyed every minute of it including the bad.

Lulu: Waiting on Raquel. I should have just kept going.

Question: So, what about your regular lives? When you’re not racing around the world, what do you like to do in your spare time?

Lulu: We love spending time with family, playing with our nieces and sleeping. We work a lot and sometimes don’t really get to see family as much or get much sleep.

Lala: But we do love to go out and dance and watch movies. We’ve gotten into fitness since THE AMAZING RACE and are definitely looking forward to doing a whole lot of traveling.

Question: You both did amazing, and we wish you had made it even further. But those challenges were no joke. Out of all of them, which was your favorite?

Lala: I loved Leg 5 of THE AMAZING RACE in Lugano! I loved bungee jumping. I always wanted to do it and to be able to have that experience in Switzerland was just amazing.

Lulu: I too loved Switzerland and loved hiking up Mt. Santis.

Question: Well, we loved watching you both in the race, you made it really fun. What are your plans for the future?

Lulu: More TV is what we are working on. We have ideas and are working hard behind closed doors to make it happen. We are working on other stuff but we don’t want to give it all away. We will continue with our radio show, we love what we do so that will hopefully, never go away
