Plot Synopsis
Based on the book by Marshall Frady. Elected governor of Alabama in 1962 he strenuously fought a Supreme Court ruling declaring racial segregation in the public schools was unconstitutional, but was forced to give way to Federal authority in 1963. He was debarred from serving succeeding terms, so his wife was elected in his place in 1966. He ran unsuccessfully for president in 1968. An attempt to assassinate him in 1972 left him paralyzed.
