Plot Synopsis

Based on the novel by Bret Lott. In 1945 Mississippi, a middle-aged wife and mother of four healthy children is devastated when she gives birth to a daughter with Down syndrome. Refusing to accept the prevailing negative attitudes toward metal retardation she uproots her family and moves to Los Angeles in the hope of finding a better life for her ''special'' child.
