Plot Synopsis

Chronicles the great love between screen legend Elizabeth Taylor and celebrated actor Richard Burton, often called the romance of the century. In 1962, they meet on the set of Cleopatra and after their first screen kiss they are inseparable. In spite of being married to others at the time, their very public love affair ignites a worldwide frenzy of press attention as the couple frolic and jet-set about. Even the Pope denounce them publicly. In 1964, only a week after divorcing Eddie Fisher, Liz marries Richard in Canada. Over the course of 10 years, alcohol, infidelity and obsessive passion fuel their tumultuous relationship, but expensive jewels or their lavish lifestyle cannot save their often combative marriage. After divorcing in 1974, they reconcile and remarry 16 months later, only to divorce again later that year. Although no longer married, their deep love and respect for one another enable them to remain dear friends until Burton's death in 1984.
