Plot Synopsis
Based on the novel by Thomas Hardy. In 1800's England, an abusive, drunken hay baler sells his wife and baby daughter to a sailor. Horrified by his actions he swears off drink for 21 years. When his search for his wife and daughter fails he works hard and becomes a successful merchant and eventually mayor. When his wife returns he conspires to remarry her but soon finds he has competition from a popular young businessman. Jealous and haunted by his past his dark nature resurfaces.
