Plot Synopsis

Based on the novel by William Trevor. A successful but lonely romance writer living in Umbria, Italy goes on a shopping trip to Milan but a terrorist's bomb explodes on her train leaving her and only three others alive. With the survivors required to remain in Italy during the investigation she invites them -including a traumatized American eight-year girl who lost her parents-to recover at her villa. When the girl's aloof uncle arrives to take her back to the States, tensions flare. She comes to believe that he and his childless wife will be unsuitable surrogate parents to the fragile child.
