Plot Synopsis

In 1950's Brooklyn a bored, free-spirited housewife and mother married to a postal worker is determined to move her family out of their low-income housing project and into the suburbs. She secretly goes to work as a cosmetics clerk in a department store and begins a summer flirtation with a beatnik writer. Her husband eventually understands the need for the family to improve their situation and they finally buy their dream house.
