Plot Synopsis

Based on the book by William H. Armstrong. Remake of the 1972 feature film. During the depression a proud southern family of black sharecroppers eke out a meager living. After his father steals a ham and is sentenced to 5 years in jail his son, who has reluctantly assumed the role of provider, embarks on a journey to manhood accompanied by his faithful dog, Sounder. Along the way he experiences the harsh treatment of whites and finds kindness in a black schoolteacher. The father eventually returns and the longed-for reunion is bittersweet, but the love of the family will endure always.
