Plot Synopsis

Based on the novel by Terry Kay. A young WW II veteran haunted by his war experiences returns home to find his parents have died and the family farm has been sold. Realizing that he no longer has a place there, he sets off to find somewhere in the world he can belong. He soon meets a mysterious stranger who suggests he go to a small North Carolina mountain community surrounded by lakes in the Valley of Light, He quickly finds himself engrained in the community, befriending a young mute boy and falling in love with a young widow. Finally, his life is taking a new direction until tragedy strikes the small community and he must decide if he really belongs there or should move on.
