Plot Synopsis

Based on Caleb Carr's 1994 novel of the same name, THE ALIENIST is a 10-episode limited drama series about the hunt for a serial killer targeting boy prostitutes in New York's Gilded Age in 1896 amidst a backdrop of vast wealth, extreme poverty and technological innovation. The story opens with a series of haunting, gruesome murders of boy prostitutes that grip New York City. Newly appointed police commissioner Theodore Roosevelt calls upon criminal psychologist (aka alienist) Dr. Laszlo Kreizler and newspaper illustrator John Moore to conduct the investigation in secret. They are joined by Sara Howard, a headstrong secretary determined to become the city's first female police detective. Using the emerging disciplines of psychology and early forensic investigation techniques, this band of social outsiders set out to find and apprehend one of New York City's first serial killers. They're joined by: Marcus and Lucius Isaacson, twin brothers who help unravel the disturbing mystery; Stevie, a tough, young boy employed by Dr. Kreizler as a driver and errand boy; Cyrus, Kreizler's valet, a man with a dark past who has been reformed by Kreizler; and Mary, Kreizler's mute maid with whom he shares a special unspoken connection. Immediately following the 2018 SCREEN ACTORS GUILD AWARDS, TNT premiered a 75-minute sneak preview of THE ALIENEST at 10pm ET/PT on Sunday, January 21, 2018, with a simulcast on TBS. THE ALIENEST officially debuted the next at 9pm on TNT. The series opens on a snowy night in New York City in 1896, where a young boy prostitute is found butchered on the unfinished Williamsburg Bridge. Following this death, an alienist (Laszlo), a newspaper illustrator (John), a secretary (Sara) and a police commissioner (Theodore Roosevelt) begin an investigation outside the law to find the serial killer.

TNT premiered the second season, THE ALIENIST: ANGEL OF DARKNESS, on Sunday, July 19, 2020 from 9-11pm ET/PT, based on best-selling author Caleb Carr's novel "The Angel of Darkness." In Season 2, Sara has opened her own private detective agency and is leading the charge on a brand-new case. She reunites with Dr. Kreizler, the formidable alienist, and John Moore, now a New York Times reporter, to find Ana Linares, the kidnapped infant daughter of the Spanish Consular. Their investigation leads them down a sinister path of murder and deceit, heading towards a dangerous and elusive killer. As in The Alienist, the series shines a light on the provocative issues of the era -- the corruption of institutions, income inequality, yellow press sensationalism, and the role of women in society -- themes that still resonate today. Returning are Daniel Bruh, Luke Evans and Dakota Fanning. Also reprising their roles are Douglas Smith and Matthew Shear as twin brothers Marcus and Lucius Isaacson; Robert Ray Wisdom as Cyrus; and Ted Levine as former NYPD Police Commissioner Thomas Byrnes. New this season are Melanie Field and Rosy McEwen.
