Plot Synopsis

ANNE is a four episode drama series about Anne Williams, who lost her 15-year-old-son Kevin in the Hillsborough Disaster -- he was one of 96 fans who lost their lives at the 1989 FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. Anne refused to believe the verdict of accidental death and was determined to discover the truth of what happened in the disaster. Over the next 24 years, Anne tracked down witnesses, sought medical advice, enlisted political support and campaigned tirelessly for new inquests for Kevin and the other victims. This is the story of one mother's quest for truth and justice. ANNE made its U.S. debut on Monday, August 22, 2022, as Acorn TV released all four episodes:

Episode 1: On 15 April 1989, 15-year-old Kevin Williams travels to Hillsborough Stadium to watch the semi-final of the FA cup between Liverpool FC and Nottingham Forest. When he doesn't return home, and following reports of fatalities from the terrible overcrowding at the game, his mum, Anne, and stepdad drive to Sheffield to try to find him, only to discover that Kevin has been killed in the crush.

Episode 2: After the inquest returns a verdict of accidental death, Anne Williams can't let her frustrations rest. She joins the Hillsborough Family Support Group and meets like-minded people who also want justice. With the help of a legal researcher, Anne tracks down witnesses who tried to save Kevin, piecing together exactly what happened and using the evidence to appeal the verdict.

Episode 3: Eight years after the Hillsborough disaster, a new Labour government orders a judicial scrutiny into Hillsborough, raising the hopes of Anne and the other families. When they are again denied new inquests, they start a group called the Hillsborough Justice Campaign. As the 20th anniversary of the disaster approaches, Anne visits Hillsborough for the first time and relives Kevin's final moments.

Episode 4: Anne urges MP Andy Burnham to fight for their cause. He has petitioned the government to release all the Hillsborough documents, and a new independent panel is created to review the evidence. Anne is sceptical, but after a two-year wait, the panel delivers its report. Meanwhile, Anne's health is failing. Will the families finally get the truth, and will Anne live long enough to see justice done?
