Plot Synopsis

As told through the first-person voice of her blog, teenager Jenna Hamilton deals with teenage life in school, at home and with friends, but her life becomes more complicated when a simple accident turns into a huge misunderstanding. The series starts in the aftermath of an accident, which others believe was a suicide attempt, leaving Jenna with a neck brace and upright arm cast. Instead of hiding, Jenna embraces her misfortune and starts her journey from being an 11 on the weird-ometer into someone who is bomb-dot-com. Most of her classmates think she's just brillz for putting herself out there, but Jenna's nemesis, mean-girl Sadie, will try to turn her life into one big fail Mary? With her new rep, can Jenna turn her flirtationship into something more -- maybe even bumping uglies? Will Jenna's parents Nancy Drew her situation, pull a Britney and put her under house arrest? Jenna's transformation won't be easy, and she'll have to work hard to avoid the shame spiral, but her misfortune will eventually serve as the catalyst for amazing change. At the end of the first season, Jenna chose the stability of Jake over her attraction to Matty, and she also deduced that her mother wrote the carefontation letter. Will Jenna's romance with Jake blossom, or will he remain in the friendzone? Will Matty change the way he acts and start to publicly pursue Jenna to try to make her second-guess her choice -- after all, the carefrontation letter to Jenna said, "Your instincts suck. Second guess them." And about that letter...when will Lacey know that Jenna knows and how will it affect their relationship? Toward the end of Season 2, Sadie sabotaged Jake's relationship with Jenna by telling him about Jenna's feelings for Matty. After Jake broke up with Jenna, he realized he made a mistake and went to her house to tell her, only to find her kissing Matt. In Season 3, which debuted on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at 10pm on MTV with back-to-back new episodes, Jenna seems to be solely living her life through her relationship with Matty and she's starting to question if there is more for her beyond her love life, especially now that Ming and Tamara start to blossom socially. Plus, Jenna's junior year brings a wave of surprises and changes that will impact her future in an indelible way and in the second episode, the death of classmate will leave Jenna to reflect on loss, grieving, and taking responsibility for a secret she's keeping from Matty. Season 3 also features two new characters: Mr. Hart, a sadistic creative writing teacher who pushes students out of their comfort zones; and Collin, a new prep-school transfer to Palos Hills. AWKWARD. returned for its midseason premiere on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at 10:30pm ET/PT on MTV, picking up with the cliffhanger from last summer, as Jenna now deals with the consequences of her making out with Collin. As she tries to prevent Matty from learning about her infidelity, she also fights her continued attraction to Collin while alienating her friends and family. Meanwhile, Ming adjusts to life as the new queen of the school's Asian Mafia. On Tuesday, April 15, 2014, MTV broadcast the Season 4 premiere at 10pm ET/PT. In the season opener, Jenna, now a senior, is determined to make a fresh start, and lingering feelings for Matty harden her resolve. During the rest of Season 4, Jenna endures more boy trouble, drama with her friends, a new girl in town who has eyes for Matty and even some catfishing. AWKWARD. returned with new Season 4 episodes on Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at 10pm ET/PT on MTV. In the fall premiere, "Finals," Jenna tries to focus on her finals after the senior ski trip, but her chances are threatened by the aftershocks from the revelations about Eva's real identity as well as Matt staying with Eva after her positive pregnancy test. On Monday, August 31, 2015 at 9pm ET/PT, MTV premiered the 24-episode, two-part fifth season of AWKWARD., shortly after a marathon (10am-7pm) of encore episodes from Season 4. There are only a few weeks left of high school, and Jenna and her friends must make the most of it. Everyone has already figured out what they are going to do next year, but there is a sense that "anything could happen" lingering in the air. The season is packed with big senior year milestone moments, including senior pranks, prom and graduation, where Jenna will have to decide once and for all: are she and Matty meant to be? With high school ending and everyone heading going in different directions, the second half of the fifth season will jump forward to one year later -- summertime back in Palos Hills -- as they quickly realize those awkward moments don't stop once you leave high school. On Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at 10pm ET/PT, MTV debuted the spring premiere of the fifth season of AWKWARD, immediately following an all-day marathon (6am-10pm) of encore episodes. The second half of Season 5 kicks off at the beginning of summer, a year after we last saw Jenna and her friends. She returns with a new-found confidence as she starts an exciting summer fellowship at an internet startup. As she reconnects with her high school friends, it's clear that there has been a lot she has missed. It's a summer of friends, self-discovery, romance and mystery that will forever impact everyone's lives.
On Tuesday, May 24, 2016 from 10-11pm ET/PT, MTV premiered the series finale of AWKWARD. In the one-hour season ender, "Second Chances; Happy Campers, Happier Trails," help from Luke lands Jenna an important meeting at SCU and Tamara comes clean about her money woes. Jenna has to decide between an important SCU event and her camp reunion, which leads to an even bigger choice: Luke or Matty.
