Plot Synopsis

Each year since 2020 -- except in 2022 -- Queen Latifah, in collaboration with Tribeca Studios and Procter & Gamble, presents a group of original films from women of color on BET Her as part of the channel's Juneteenth programming (2020 & 2021) or Black History Month through Juneteenth (2023).

BET HER PRESENTS: QUEEN COLLECTIVE 2020 featured two new films from 2020 ("Gloves Off" and "Tangled Roots") and two from the previous year. The half-hour programs debuted back-to-back on Saturday, June 13, 2020 from 9-11pm ET/PT on BET Her, with a simulcast on BET:

"Gloves Off" (9pm): A young police officer suits up and fights for her community by day, then laces up and defends her reigning boxing title by night. Directed by Ugonna Okpalaoka and Nadine Natour.

"Tangled Roots" (9:30pm): Attica Scott, the only black woman in the Kentucky state legislature, fights to dismantle a system of discrimination against black people penalized for something seemingly innocuous -- their hair. From filmmaker Samantha Knowles.

"Ballet After Dark" (10pm): A young woman who found the strength to survive after an attack creates an organization that helps sexual abuse and domestic violence survivors find healing after trauma through dance therapy.

"If There Is Light" (10:30pm): Fourteen-year-old Janiyah Blackmon wrestles with her new life in New York City as her mother tries to move her family out of the shelter system and into a stable home.



BET HER PRESENTS: QUEEN COLLECTIVE returned for a second season of four half-hour films on Saturday, June 19, 2021 from 9-11pm ET/PT on BET Her, with a simulcast on BET.

"A Song of Grace" (9pm): Twelve-year-old composer Grace Moore navigates the challenges of today's world and writes a new composition, making a space for herself in classical music and sharing her gift.

"Game Changers" (9:30pm): Tanya Depass, a lifelong Chicagoan and African-American gamer, fights to make gaming better and more inclusive for everyone.

"Change the Name" (10pm): Young Black freedom fighters and their educators are the first folks in the country to change the name of a park from a slaveholder to abolitionists Anna and Frederick Douglass in Chicago's North Lawndale neighborhood.

"Black Birth" (10:30pm): A lyrical journey of Black expectant mothers, including the filmmaker, building community in hopes of safely navigating pregnancy in the U.S.

A new season of BET HER PRESENTS: QUEEN COLLECTIVE debuted on Friday, February 24, 2023 from 9-10pm ET/PT on BET Her and BET. The two half-hour films in 2023 are:

"In Her Element" (9pm): When an up-and-coming rapper in Nashville, Tennessee, gets the chance of a lifetime to break boundaries in the global epicenter of country music, she seizes the opportunity. Directed by Idil Ibrahim.

"Gaps" (9:30pm): A self-conscious Black tween from a close-knit family is determined to change her gap-toothed smile...by any means necessary. Written and directed by Jenn Shaw.

"Team Dream" (Friday, March 24, 2023 at 9pm): Friends and competitive swimmers Ann and Madeline are on their journey to the National Senior Games, where nothing -- not age, race or history -- will stand in their way. Directed and produced by Luchina Fisher.

"Negra, Yo Soy Bella" (Friday, March 24, 2023 at 9:30pm): This film is a portrait of Mar Cruz- an Afro-Puerto Rican woman who sources strength, healing, and black pride through the tradition of Bomba. Directed by Vashni Korin.

"Bone Black: Midwives vs. The South" (Sunday, April 16, 2023 at 10pm): This experimental documentary is about the history and erasure of Black midwives in the American South and how the attack on birth workers has contributed to the Black infant and maternal mortality crisis. Directed by Imani Dennison.

"Founder Girls" (Saturday, June 17, 2023 at 8pm): In this kaleidoscopic ode to girlhood, a group of young campers find freedom, and find themselves, at a historically Black summer camp. Directed by Contessa Gayles.
