Plot Synopsis

Dr. Catherine Black, a world-famous neurologist, unravels the mysteries of her patients' brains, while hiding her own secret: she's bipolar. There's only one person who knows everything -- her psychiatrist, Dr. Helen Hartramph, who is her mother figure and touchstone, as Catherine returns weekly for advice, medication and comfort. At work, Catherine and her team of fourth year medical students collaborate with the staff at The Cube, a state-of-the-art neurological center in NYC, where they draw patients from around the world and are constantly challenged by treating people with rare, highly visual, often hallucinogenic and startling conditions. Meanwhile, Catherine is attracted to her new co-worker, the womanizing neurosurgeon Dr. Ian Bickman, while Will, a sexy new chef with his own restaurant in Brooklyn, is pressuring her to marry him. But what would Will do if he knew that there's another side to her that's not easily controlled? Dr. Owen Morely, the medical director of The Cube, is Catherine's former teacher, current mentor and fellow neurologist, but her closest confidant is her older brother, Joshua, because they are forever bonded by the struggle they shared to overcome a difficult childhood. And Catherine's struggle with her disease continues at work when, after the chief of neurosurgery suffers a seizure during surgery, the Cube's medical director announces that any doctors suffering from medical conditions that could harm patients must come forward.
On Thursday, July 24, 2014 from 8-10pm ET/PT, ABC broadcast the two-hour season finale of BLACK BOX. In Part 1, "The Fear," Catherine is experiencing hallucinations and refuses Dr. Hartramph's urging to be admitted into a hospital. Her behavior is becoming increasingly manic and it isn't long before Mahmoud begins to piece together what she's seeing. Then in the night's second episode, "Consequences," Catherine returns to face the fallout at home and at The Cube after undergoing treatment in rehab. Owen is agreeable to having Catherine back at work, though it isn't without strict parameters, making it a challenge for Catherine to earn her credibility back.
