Plot Synopsis

Based on Anna Bodin and Peter Sjolund's 2021 book, "The Breakthrough: How the genealogist solved the double murder in Linkoping," THE BREAKTHROUGH is a limited series that follows a detective, who teams up with a genealogist, to catch the killer in a shocking double homicide that has gone unsolved for 16 years. After a double murder sends shock waves through a quiet Swedish town, lead detective John promises the grieving families that he will find the killer. As weeks turn into years without answers and his home life slowly falls apart, a desperate John turns to an unlikely ally to help crack the case: genealogist Per. John and Per's investigative efforts are obstructed by their clashing personalities -- and a prying journalist adds to the pressure. With everyone nearing the ends of their ropes, a revelation from an unexpected source leads to a breakthrough in the case. All four 40-minute episodes of THE BREAKTHROUGH dropped on Tuesday, January 7, 2025 on Netflix.
