Plot Synopsis

Based on real-life accounts by former French spies, THE BUREAU tells the story of a man torn between love and loyalty in a world where a single lie can kill. When French intelligence officer Guillaume 'Malotru' Debailly returns to Paris after six years as an undercover agent in Syria, he struggles to reconnect with his daughter, ex-wife, colleagues and even, his old self. But after learning that Nadia, his lover and mistress from Syria, is now in Paris, Guillaume breaks agency rules and approaches her as the man he was in Damascus: Paul Lefebvre. As Guillaume begins living a double life, he opens himself -- and The Bureau -- up to new and unprecedented dangers. With Cyclone still missing, the Bureau now has to handle the exfiltration of Gherbi, one of their assets in Algeria. Malotru rekindles his relationship with Nadia, but his guilt and resulting paranoia soon make him question her loyalty. Soon, Nadia joins in on a mysterious meeting with other Syrians, but her regular "night-outs" soon arouse the suspicion of a Syrian agent, Nadim. SundanceTV aired the U.S. premiere of THE BUREAU on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at 11:50pm ET/PT, immediately after the series finale of RECTIFY.

Season 4 of THE BUREAU had its U.S. premiere on Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT, as SundanceNow released the entire 10-episode fourth season. The new season opens with Malotru trying to negotiate his return to France while being chased by the DGSE and the CIA all the way to Moscow. Dumped by the DGSE, Malotru comes out of hiding and is quickly located by the Russian secret services, which arrest him for espionage and leave him to the mercy of other inmates.

On Thursday, June 18, 2020 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT, Season 5 of THE BUREAU had its U.S. premiere, as SundanceNow released the first episode of the new season. Within the DGSE (Directorate General of External Security), the "Office of Legends" operate the most valuable members of the French intelligence services: secret agents. Spending prolonged amounts of time immersed in hostile countries, these operatives are tasked with identifying potential sources of intelligence among the people they come into contact with. Operating under a fabricated identity, they live for years in a permanent state of double identity, between an apparently normal life and their covert intelligence activity. JJA, Director of Internal Security, has taken over managing the office as Marie-Jeanne has opted to get out of the office and test her fieldwork skills on the ground in Egypt. The DGSE will be shaken up by rumors published about Malotru's fate: is he dead or alive? What role did DGSE and the CIA play? The leaks bring back old demons for JJA, increasing his paranoia and worrying his closest collaborators, Sisteron and Ellenstein. His obsessions are joined by a new agent, Mille Sabords, who tries to approach the Saudi secret services while investigating the sacrificial victim Paul Lefebvre. Another collateral victim of Malotru's disappearance: Cesar, the genius geek, who infiltrated the best cyber-attackers of the FSB who are now preparing a large-scale operation. SundanceNow releases a new episode each Thursday.
