Plot Synopsis

In 14th-century Barcelona, a serf named Bernat is determined climb to wealth and freedom incurs the disdain of the noble class and the suspicion of the Inquisition. Based on Ildefonso Falcones's novel of the same name, CATHEDRAL OF THE SEA is a one-hour scripted series that opens in 1319, as Bernat flees from danger with infant son Arnau to his sister's home in Barcelona, where Arnau is blamed for a tragedy 10 years later. A remarriage leads to a change of residence and occupation for Bernat and Arnau, while Joan is offered an opportunity to get an education. Four years pass and famine-stricken serfs revolt against the hoarding nobles. A brave act makes Arnau's dream come true, and he later falls in love. Torn between two women, Arnau escapes by running off to war. Searching for Arnau, Aledis has a fateful encounter. Originally scheduled to debut on Saturday, September 1, 2018 -- and advertised as such on the show's Netflix page until two days beforehand -- CATHEDRAL OF THE SEA was unexpectedly released one day early on Friday, August 31, 2018 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT.
