Plot Synopsis

For nine weeks starting in mid-May 2009, camera crews gained unprecedented access to America's largest single-site jail -- the Cook County Jail in Chicago, Illinois. This series reveals the violent and unpredictable world behind bars, where everyday is a battle for control. Inmates build improvised weapons to use them against each other and the staff while the guards must use a combination of brains and brawn to maintain order.
