Plot Synopsis
As the first US television series produced entirely in Cuba, CUBAN CHROME, narrated by Cuban-American actor William Levy, chronicles the adventures of A Lo Cubano Car Club as they go to extreme measures to preserve their treasured cars and pass them down from generation to generation. After the 1959 Cuban Revolution and the subsequent United States embargo, it had been illegal to import American cars to the island nation -- as a result, Cuba's vintage American vehicles are frozen in time. For Cubans, these cars are not just a means of transportation, but a way of life. Through the club's car restorations and repairs, this one-hour reality series explores the challenges and joys of life in Cuba, presenting an authentic look into their culture of passion, grit, determination and ingenuity. Alberto Gutierez is the founder and president of the A Lo Cubano car club, who lights up when he speaks of one day handing over the club's legacy to his son, Dayan, the Vice President of Events. Dayan is also a co-pilot during rally races so when there is a rally, his job is to sit passenger side and keep track of the drivers stats. Other people featured in CUBAN CHROME include: Demetrio Montalvo, who does not belong to the A Lo Cubano classic car club yet -- because he does not have the means -- but uses his "make something out of nothing" mentality that it takes to provide for his family; Roberto Ordaz, who speaks perfect English and whose dream is to one day own his very own classic automobile; Ricardo Medel, a car mechanic by trade and a former professor of electrical engineering, who has been restoring his beloved Austin-Healey for 17 years, partly because he won't accept anything sub-standard; and Fernando Barral, a full-service mechanic specializing in rare classic cars, whose most recent success was converting a '32 Ford Model T into a 700 horsepower hot rod that has left even brand new cars in the dust. CUBAN CHROME is simulcast in English on Discovery Channel and in Spanish on Discovery en Espanol.
