Plot Synopsis

Ben Makuch travels the world to meet with hackers, government officials, and dissidents to investigate the ecosystem of cyberwarfare. The series premiere focuses on the notorious hacktivist collective Anonymous, which has targeted everyone from PayPal to the FBI. But a string of arrests have crippled the group. In the second episode, Makuch reveals why hackers and computer experts question the government's evidence about Sony Pictures being hacked by North Korea. On Friday, July 1, 2016 --- four days before the official series premiere -- Viceland released the entire first episode on its YouTube channel and on its website. CYBERWAR returned for its midseason premiere on Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at 10:30pm ET/PT on Viceland, immediately following a 2.5-hour block (8-10:30pm) of encore episodes from Season 1. In the fall premiere, "The Zero Day Market," focuses on zero days, bugs in software that hackers use to break into systems, which can be valued at up to a million dollars, with both buyers and sellers shrouded in secrecy. Season 2 of CYBERWAR premiered on Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at 10pm ET/PT on Viceland. In the season opener, "The Great Meme War," Ben reveals memes, which are the Alt-Right's powerful weapon in America's culture war.

On Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at 10:30pm ET/PT, Viceland premiered the Season 2 finale of CYBERWAR. In the season ender, "Mexico's War on Watchdogs," the government of Mexico buys hacking tools in its fight against cartels, but their spyware shows up on the phones of journalists exposing government corruption.
