Plot Synopsis

DARK SIDE OF COMEDY, the 4th series in VICE's DARK SIDE franchise, examines the internal battles, unexpected fame and societal pressures that are ever-present in the comedy world; as well as the lasting legacy of the women and men who allow us to see the world through their eyes. Each installment of the 10-episode first season focuses on a different comedian, including ndrew Dice Clay, Chris Farley, Freddie Prinze, Artie Lange, Roseanne Barr, Dustin Diamond, Greg Giraldo, Brett Butler, Richard Pryor and Maria Bamford. The season opener features Chris Farley, whose friends at SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE conspired to help save him when he was struggling with addiction and a low self-image.

Season 2 of DARK SIDE OF COMEDY premiered on Tuesday, October 17, 2023 at 10pm ET/PT on VICE. The season opener focuses on Robin Williams, whose suicide shocked the world. While he was one of the most successful comedians ever, he was struggling privately with crushing health and psychological issues. Later installments highlight the careers of Sam Kinison, Joan Rivers, Carlos Mencia, Phil Hartman, Tracy Morgan, the cast of FAMILY MATTERS, Ellen DeGeneres, Norm MacDonald, and Gilda Radner.

On Tuesday, December 19, 2023 at 10pm ET/PT, VICE premiered the "Gilda Radner" episode of DARK SIDE OF COMEDY. In the season finale, Gilda Radner's pioneering success was plagued by trauma, eating disorders, heartbreak and cancer, all of which she turned into comedy material.
