Plot Synopsis

Set against the backdrop of a predominantly white Ivy League university where racial tensions bubble just below the surface, DEAR WHITE PEOPLE is a send-up of post-racial America that weaves together the universal story of finding one's own identity and forging a wholly unique path. The satirical series -- which picks up where Justin Simien's acclaimed 2014 film by the same name left off -- follows a group of Winchester University's students of color as they navigate a diverse landscape of social injustice, cultural bias, political correctness (or lack thereof) and sometimes misguided activism in the millennial age. Through an absurdist lens, DEAR WHITE PEOPLE utilizes biting irony, self-deprecation and sometimes brutal honesty to hold up a mirror to the issues plaguing society today. On Friday, April 28, 2017 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT, Netflix released the first season of DEAR WHITE PEOPLE, which is narrated by Giancarlo Esposito and written by Justin Simien, who also directed the first episode.

On Friday, May 4, 2018 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT, Netflix released the 10-episode second season of DEAR WHITE PEOPLE. In Season 2, romantic dilemmas, a social media troll and big changes at Armstrong-Parker House push Sam, Lionel and friends to the breaking point. The season opens in the wake of the town hall protest, where Sam finds herself at the center of an alt-right backlash and goes to war with a social media troll. Then, still haunted by flashbacks to the house party, Reggie bounces from therapy to Bible study to drinking as he seeks an outlet for his pent-up emotions. While party-hopping on Pride Night, Lionel struggles to make small talk with strangers and decipher mixed signals from Silvio.

Season 3 of DEAR WHITE PEOPLE premiered on Friday, August 2, 2019 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT, as Netflix released the entire 10-episode new season. As the students of Winchester embrace new creative challenges and romantic possibilities, a charismatic professor shakes up life on campus. The season opens with Sam, Lionel and the rest of the crew getting caught up in their own priorities, while Al suddenly feels like the only one fighting for change at Winchester.

The entire 10-episode fourth and final season of DEAR WHITE PEOPLE dropped on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 on Netflix. Set against the backdrop of senior year at Winchester -- as well as a not-so-distant, post-pandemic future -- Season 4 finds future Sam and Lionel looking back at the most formative (and theatrical) year of their lives, which plays out as a '90s musical. On the first day of senior year, the campus is abuzz with Career Day plans and news that AP House will be producing Winchester's historic Varsity Show. As Reggie considers a sweet job offer, Joelle seizes a chance to blend faith and science, and Troy makes his pitch to the Black Caucus.
