Plot Synopsis

Created by Jason Jones and Samantha Bee -- and inspired by their own experiences with family trips -- THE DETOUR is a half-hour comedy series that follows the family's unfiltered dad, Nate, as he hits the road with wife Robin and kids Delilah and Jared. Every leg of their trip is fraught with disaster as they encounter one hellish turn after another. If there's trouble on the road, this family will find it and plow into it. On Monday, April 4, 2016 at Midnight ET/9pm PT, TBS premiered a sneak peek of THE DETOUR immediately following the postgame show for the 2016 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship featuring Villanova and North Carolina. The series officially debuted one week later on Monday, April 11 from 9-10pm ET/PT, as TBS premiered back-to-back new episodes. The series opens with Nate, Robin and the kids heading from Syracuse to Ft. Lauderdale in a janky minivan instead of flying. Between truckers, aggressive drivers and road side breakfast spots, nothing is really what it seems on the road. Season 2 of THE DETOUR premieres with back-to-back episodes on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 from 10-11pm ET/PT. During the second season of this all-too-honest look at the family dynamic, Nate receives a promising job opportunity, and the family moves to New York City for a fresh start. Everyone is excited except for Robin, who knows that a move to the big city means her mysterious past may catch up with her. While Nate and Robin adjust to new jobs, new neighbors and old flames, Jared and Delilah dive headfirst into the awkwardness of adolescence. Despite questionable parenting and terrible decisions, the love the Parkers have for each other will keep the family intact as they endure another disastrous adventure. The second season features a number of special guests, including series executive producer and co-creator Samantha Bee, as well as James Cromwell, John Oliver, Laura Benanti, Jeffrey Vincent Parise and Max Casella.
On Tuesday, April 25, 2017 from 10-11pm ET/PT, TBS premiered the Season 2 finale of THE DETOUR, showing back-to-back new episodes with limited commercial interruption. In the penultimate episode (10pm), "The Mule," Robin and Nate live out their (mostly Nate's) action movie fantasies as they make their way to the kids, who are actually doing just fine without them. Then, in the season ender (10:30pm), "The Ass," the family is reunited, but this time it's Robin who makes a huge mistake. Earlier the same day TNT announced it ordered a third season of THE DETOUR.
