Plot Synopsis

Based on the web series of the same name, DOWNWARD DOG is a half-hour comedy series about a struggling millennial, Nan, as observed from the point of view of her lonely and philosophical dog, Martin. Just one session at obedience school makes them realize that even at their worst they may be the best thing for each other. While Martin lays around at home questioning the motives of the neighborhood cat and exercises newly acquired "superpowers" to open the doggie door with his mind, Nan spends her days at advertising agency Clark and Bow, struggling to prove herself to clients and senior management. Depite her boss Kevin's patronizing and demoralizing criticisms, Nan and her best friend and co-worker, Jenn, find creative ways to persevere. Because of Nan's long hours at work, she relies on ex-boyfriend Jason to help take care of Martin. Jason's easy-going and sometimes unemployed lifestyle strengthens his friendship with Martin, but makes it difficult for Nan to move on. ABC debuted a sneak-peek premiere of DOWNWARD DOG on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at 9:30pm ET/PT, four months after the series became the first network comedy ever to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 22, 2017.

On Tuesday, June 27, 2017 from 10-11pm ET/PT, ABC premiered the series finale of DOWNWARD DOG, airing back-to-back new episodes. In the night's first new episode (10pm), "Getting What You Always Wanted," Nan's long-anticipated national campaign is hours away from launching in Times Square on the Jumbotron, when an overwrought Nan discovers an algorithm has been flipped, and instead of blocking penis photos from the photo feed it will choose them, which could torpedo the whole campaign. Meanwhile, Martin decides to reduce Nan's stress by taking out his sworn enemy, Pepper, to unexpected results. Then, in the series ender (10:30pm), "Getting Lost," to take a break from the pressures of a major decision at work and the mess she's made of her life, Nan decides to take a vacation. On the way, she stops by her estranged father's place in the country, hoping to say hi and go. Instead, she discovers he's selling the family home. While Nan tries to pack up some childhood treasures, Dad takes Martin for a walk -- but Martin, runs off into the woods, hoping to prove he's wild and free like a wolf. Instead, he discovers he's not a wolf -- he's a dog who's lost.
