Plot Synopsis

ENGINEERING DISASTERS investigates what went wrong in recent catastrophes and attempts to answer why they occurred and how they might be prevented in the future. Each one-hour episode features at least three disasters, including: the April 2013 explosion at a Texas fertilizer plant that killed 15 people and destroyed most of the small town; the South Korean Ferry sinking in 2014; a building demolition that went horribly wrong in Philadelphia in 2013; the notorious Chilean mine disaster on August 5, 2010 where 33 miners were trapped underground for nearly two months; two separate Metro North train derailments in 2013; and several other horrifying incidents in which engineering failed.

On Saturday, May 23, 2015 from 10pm-Midnight ET/PT, History premiered the season finale of ENGINEERING DISASTERS, showing back-to-back new episode. The night's first episode (10pm), "Raging Rocket," investigates a mudslide that swallows an entire neighborhood, leaving scientists baffled. A rocket on its way to the international space station suddenly bursts into flames just seconds after liftoff. What caused one of the busiest commuter train lines in the country to fly off the tracks twice in just six months? A West Virginia coal mine mysteriously ignites, killing 29 miners inside. And, could engineering be to blame for the death of more than two hundred thousand people in Haiti? Then, in the season finale (11pm), "Exploding Manhole Covers," a modern jetliner crashes with 228 people on board. An oil refinery erupts in Utah, sending shockwaves through town and damaging over 100 homes. Manhole covers explode around the country, killing people and destroying property. A coal filled freight train derails, and buries two women sitting near the tracks. And, a routine elevator ride turns deadly.
