Plot Synopsis

THE FOSTERS is a one-hour scripted drama series about two moms raising a multi-ethnic family, revealing issues regarding gay parenting, the foster-care system, mixed-race families and modern-day teenagers. Stef Foster, a dedicated police officer, and her partner, Lena Adams, a school Vice Principal, have built a close-knit, loving family with Stef's biological son from a previous marriage, Brandon, and their adopted twins, Mariana and Jesus. The Fosters' lives are disrupted in unexpected ways when Lena meets Callie, a hardened teen with an abusive past, who has spent her life in and out of foster homes. Lena and Stef warily welcome Callie into their home thinking it's just for a few weeks -- until a more permanent placement can be found -- and they find that sharing space may prove difficult for the teens. Callie is quick to observe that the Fosters are an atypical family, and her blunt commentary hits a nerve with Jesus and Mariana who are struggling with their own identities. Plus, Callie discovers that Mariana is harboring a secret that will affect other family members. This series is executive produced by Jennifer Lopez. THE FOSTERS returned for its second season on Monday, June 16, 2014 at 9pm ET/PT on ABC Family, with Callie and Jude adjusting to their new roles in the family. Callie's future with the Fosters hinges on the revelation that Donald is not her birth father. Brandon struggles to recover and come to terms with his guilt over sleeping with Dani, and big questions still remain about what Mike was up to the night Ana disappeared. Meanwhile, Jesus and Emma's relationship impacts Emma's standing with her teammates, which causes tension between them. Mariana has made a big change, much to Stef's dismay. In the summer finale, Callie turns to her biological father when she learns Rita and the Girls United foster group home are in dire need of support, but her good deed threatens to backfire. In an effort to help Rita with a dilemma involving Girls United, Callie calls in a favor from her wealthy biological father, Robert Quinn. But an unexpected betrayal threatens to derail the new bond she's forging with the Quinns. Meanwhile, the pressure Connor faces from his father to end his friendship with Jude intensifies and leads Lena to make a life-changing decision. The tension mounts between Brandon and Lou, despite their bandmate Mat's warnings against drama. And a visit with someone from his past makes Jesus see his relationship with Hayley in a whole new light. ABC Family premiered a special holiday episode of THE FOSTERS on Monday, December 8, 2014 from 8-9pm ET/PT. In "Christmas Past," Brandon looks back on Callie and Jude's first Christmas with the Foster family in an all-new holiday-themed episode. As Callie and Jude spend their first Christmas with the Fosters, Callie feels the sting of still being an official foster kid while Jude's guilt over having been adopted has him overcompensating. Stef feels that Grandma Sharon's (guest star Annie Potts) gift giving is excessive, especially when she learns where the money is coming from. Lena must face her own bias against another family member. THE FOSTERS returned for the rest of its second season on Monday, January 19, 2015 at 8pm ET/PT on ABC Family, picking up from the holiday episode cliffhanger. This season Stef and Lena find themselves on the defense when Robert Quinn expresses a sincere interest in having Callie be part of his family. A startling development leaves Callie in a tailspin, resulting in questionable decisions about her future, while Jude tries to manage his friendship with Connor amid their parents' conflict. Jesus and Mariana are thrown for a loop when a newly sober Ana reveals big news, and Brandon reevaluates his musical aspirations when an unexpected offer comes his way. The season will also see the return of Rosie O'Donnell in a recurring role as Rita Henricks, a tough yet compassionate woman who works in the foster care system. On Monday, June 8, 2015 at 8pm ET/PT, ABC Family premiered the third season of THE FOSTERS. Season 3 picks up during summer, a few weeks after the cliffhanger finale left off, as the family deals with the aftermath of the terrible car accident involving Mariana, Jesus and their pregnant biological mother Ana. Now that Callie is back at the Adams Foster's home, she is feeling secure for the first time in a long time and determined to have a summer of free-spirited fun, including trying her best to get over Brandon. Meanwhile, Brandon is going to Idyllwild Music Program where he will be faced with serious competition. Jude and Connor continue to develop their relationship and what it means to be a young teen exploring new love. Stef and Lena continue to face challenges as a couple and as parents, yet are determined to fight through them together. On Monday, January 25, 2016 at 8pm ET/PT on Freeform, THE FOSTERS returns with new episodes. In the winter premiere, "First Impressions," Callie is now officially adopted into the Adams Foster family and must put aside any romantic feelings for Brandon. She does so by throwing herself into her "Fost and Found" website, even drawing the interest of an investor (guest star Kelli Williams). As the third season of THE FOSTERS continues, Callie and Brandon share a significant secret but focus on their interests to help them move on with their lives. A serious medical issue for Stef results in a clash of opinion between her wife Lena and her mother, Sharon (guest star Annie Potts). Jude must deal with his boyfriend's decision to move away while Jesus and Mariana are surprised when an old friend returns. Loyalties are questioned while new relationships develop, and family ties bring love and support amid the chaos of life. Rosie O'Donnell and Rob Morrow also guest star in the second half of Season 3. Season 4 of THE FOSTERS premiered on on Monday, June 20, 2016 at 8pm ET/PT on Freeform, with the first two episodes directed by Rob Morrow. Picking up where the Season 3 cliffhanger left off, Callie admits her past relationship with Brandon to her moms. But before Stef and Lena can even process the information, the school goes into a "Code Blue" lockdown when it's discovered Mariana's boyfriend Nick showed up with his father's gun after seeing her kiss her ex-boyfriend Mat. On Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at 8pm ET/PT, Freeform debuted the Season 4 winter premiere of THE FOSTERS. In the mid-season premiere, "Insult to Injury," in the aftermath of Jesus' fight with Nick over Mariana, Jesus is knocked out. On the way to the hospital, things take a turn for the worse, leaving him fighting for his life. Meanwhile, Callie finds herself in a dangerous situation after taking a ride with Troy and Mariana is guilt-ridden over the fact that her actions led to Jesus' current condition. THE FOSTERS returned for its fifth season on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at 8pm ET/PT on Freeform, with a new season that includes the program's 100th episode. In the season opener, "Resist," Stef frantically searches for Callie after she offers to help Diamond thinking she has nothing to lose after accepting the plea deal. Struggling with his TBI, Jesus unleashes his anger after discovering Brandon helped Emma with a deeply personal decision. With Mariana leading the charge, protests continue over Anchor Beach Charter's privatization.
