Plot Synopsis

Based on celebrity chef Eddie Huang's memoir of the same name, FRESH OFF THE BOAT is a half-hour sitcom that centers on an immigrant Taiwanese family that tries to survive culture shock, while chasing the American dream in Orlando, Florida, in the 1990s. Twelve-year-old, hip-hop loving Eddie and his family just moved from Washington DC's Chinatown area to suburban Orlando, where they face culture shock. His immigrant mother, Jessica, had never before seen the inside of a traditional American supermarket, and she's overwhelmed by the spectacle at the supermarket. Eddie's heritage causes him problems at school when the popular kids banish him from their table after he opens his fragrant traditional Chinese lunch. But his immigrant dad, Louis, embraces his new culture by decorating his American steakhouse with an Old West theme -- complete with wagon-wheel tables -- to make his restaurant more appealing to typical Orlandonians. Meanwhile, his Grandma Huang is in her own world, cracking up while she watches the shopping networks with her new credit card in hand. Although she speaks no English, she is inexplicably tickled to death by Joan Rivers. Plus, Eddie must watch after his two younger brothers, while still trying to maintain whatever street cred he thinks he has. FRESH OFF THE BOAT premiered on Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at 8:30 and 9:30pm ET/PT on ABC, followed by its time slot premiere on Tuesday, February 10 at 8pm ET/PT.
