Plot Synopsis
Set in the Bronx in the 1970s, THE GET DOWN is a music-driven drama series that explores how the Big Apple gave birth to hip-hop, punk and disco during a time when New York City teetered on the brink of bankruptcy, as told through the lives and music of the South Bronx kids who changed the world. Consigned to rubble, this rag-tag crew of teenagers are nothings and nobodies with no one to shelter them -- except each other, armed only with verbal games, improvised dance steps, some magic markers and spray cans. The group includes: Shaolin Fantastic, a child of the streets, who is thrill-seeking, unpredictable, eccentric but above all, enigmatic; Ezekiel, a smart, resourceful teen brimming with untapped talent and unrequited love, who is determined to make his mark in this world; Ra-Ra, a loyal, respected, protective friend and brother with his head screwed on tight, who is the voice of reason beyond his years; and Boo-Boo, a mechanically-minded kid, who wants to get down even though he's an irrepressible 40-year old in a 14-year old body. Baz Luhrmann directed the first episode and served as executive producer, overseeing all creative aspects of the show. Joining him on the creative team are four-time Academy-Award winner Catherine Martin as Costume and Production Designer, along with Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Stephen Adly Guirgis, hip-hop historian and writer Nelson George, and a trio of the pioneers of hip-hop: Grandmaster Flash, DJ Kool Herc, and Afrika Bambaataa, each of whom is portrayed on the series. Netflix will release the first six episodes of THE GET DOWN on Friday, August 12, 2016 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT.
