Plot Synopsis

This one-hour drama series follows the interns, residents, and doctors at Seattle Grace Hospital as they juggle their complicated personal lives with the stress and competitiveness of life-and-death medical decisions. The series started with the trials and tribulations of five first-year surgical interns: Meredith Grey, the show's namesake (and narrator) who is the daughter of a former Seattle Grace surgeon and now the wife of Derek Shepherd, the Chief of Neurosurgery; Cristina Yang, Meredith's very career-oriented best friend, who was left at the altar by Preston Burke before she married Owen Hunt many years later; Alex Karev, a discourteous womanizer, who became involved with patient Ava and was later married to Izzie Stevens before she asked him for a divorce; Izzie Stevens, who is a recent cancer survivor, fell in love with patient Denny Duquette, accidentally killed him as she tried to get him a new heart, and was later dismissed from Seattle Grace for other issues with patient care; and George O'Malley, who, despite his passive personality, still managed to sleep with Meredith, marry Callie Torres, and cheat on Callie with Izzie and who sacrificed his own life to save a girl from being hit by a bus. Having passed their boards in Season 8, Meredith, Cristina, Alex, and Jackson Avery all planned on taking positions at different hospitals, leaving Seattle Grace behind. But that was before the plane crash at the end of Season 8 that left the fates of Meredith, Derek, Cristina, Mark and Arizona in doubt, while taking the life of Lexie Grey, Meredith's half-sister and Seattle Grace resident who was in relationships with Mark, Alex, and Jackson, a surgical resident and grandson of famous surgeon Dr. Harper Avery. Meanwhile, April Kepner's career as a doctor seemed to be over when she failed her exam and was fired. Also before the crash, Meredith and Derek were focused on being new parents to baby Zola and were debating whether to move into their dream house or start over in Boston. Cristina and Owen's marriage was still on the rocks, and Callie and Arizona were happily settling into motherhood. Bailey had decided to give love another chance with her new fiance, Ben, and Richard Webber found comfort in the arms of Jackson's mother, Catherine Avery. At the end of the ninth season, the hospital staff endured another disaster -- this time, a storm hit Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Season 10 opened with a two-hour premiere event that picked up with the storm that ended the previous season. A giant mudslide in Seattle injured a group of first responders and citizens, causing the already shorthanded ER to spring into action. Meanwhile, Meredith was faced with a tough decision that will affect the life of a loved one, Richard's life was in extreme danger, and Callie was rocked by the reality of Arizona's infidelity, forcing her to make a bold decision about their relationship.
