Plot Synopsis

The HERO DOG AWARDS were created in 2010 by the American Humane Association to celebrate the devoted relationship between dogs and people. Dogs may be nominated in eight categories: Law Enforcement & Arson Dogs; Service Dogs; Therapy Dogs; Military Dogs; Guide Dogs; Search and Rescue Dogs; Hearing Dogs; and Emerging Hero Dogs (the category for ordinary dogs doing extraordinary things). Finalists in each category are judged by a blue-ribbon panel consisting of both celebrities and animal experts. On November 11, 2011, Hallmark Channel aired the first ceremony, which was hosted by Carson Kressley and held at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on October 1.

The third annual HERO DOG AWARDS, hosted by Joey Lawrence, took place on Saturday, October 5, 2013 at the Beverly Hilton in Hollywood, and the event was televised on Hallmark Channel on Wednesday, October 30 from 8-10pm ET/PT. Lawrence was joined by the celebrity presenters: Betty White, Bailee Madison, Danielle Fishel, Naomi Judd, Pauley Perrette, Ryan O'Neal, Jennifer Coolidge, Lori Loughlin, Matt Leinart, Lisa Vanderpump, Daphne Zuniga, Rico Rodriguez, Victoria Stilwell, and many more.

James Denton and Beth Stern co-hosted the fourth annual HERO DOG AWARDS, which was taped before a live audience on September 27, 2014 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and premiered one month later on Thursday, October 30, 2014 from 8-10pm ET/PT on Hallmark Channel. In addition to naming this year's American Hero Dog, the HERO DOG AWARDS honored seven other top dogs, while also celebrating the top veterinary professionals in the country by presenting the first-ever American Humane Association Hero Veterinarian and Hero Veterinary Technician Awards.

Nationwide popular votes totaling over one million and a panel of celebrity judges determined which of the seven finalists was named the 2018 American Hero Dog. Plus, Beth Stern receives the first ever "Adoption Ever After" Award, recognizing her efforts to end the homeless pet population.
