Plot Synopsis
Comedian/actor/podcaster Tom Arnold takes his addled activism off Twitter into real life and tries his hand at citizen journalism. Using his network of connections to search for the truth behind the many rumored -- and possibly damaging -- recordings of Donald Trump. As Arnold's potentially quixotic search among the powerful people who may have or know of these tapes unfolds, the series becomes a funhouse mirror snapshot of the current media and political landscape. On June 21, 2018, Arnold tweeted a picture of him with Michael Cohen in New York with the text, "I love New York," fueling speculation about any recordings Cohen might have. A day later, Arnold followed up on Twitter with this message, "Michael Cohen didn't say Me & him were teaming up to take down Donald Trump! Michael has enough Trump on his plate. I'm the crazy person who said Me & Michael Cohen were teaming up to take down Trump of course. I meant it. Michael doesn't get paid by Vice #thehuntforthetrumptapes" A month later -- on July 20 -- Arnold tweeted this comment when mainstream media revealed that Cohen had secretly recorded tapes of Trump discussing payments to a former Playboy: "I believe I broke this couple weeks ago when I became besties with Michael Cohen. I know, I'm crazy." In the series opener, "The Howard Stern Files," Arnold begins his hunt by confronting radio show host Howard Stern on air about why he won't release his past interviews with President Trump.
