Plot Synopsis

During the Japanese colonial period, married playwright Kim Woo-jin falls in love with soprano Yun Sim-deok, one of Korea's notable New Women. While planning to stage new Korean plays in Joseon, Kim U-jin meets music student Yun Sim-deok, who wonders why he'd risk doing so under Japanese rule. Sim-deok wants to know about U-jin's dream and decides to go with the theater troupe to visit his family home in Mokpo, where a surprise awaits her. Woo-jin's family finds he hasn't come home. Sim-deok gets a recording contract and Woo-jin resolves to live for his writing -- and for the woman he loves. HYMN OF DEATH had its U.S. premiere on Friday, December 14, 2018 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT, as Netflix released three episodes of this South Korean television series, based on the 1991 film DEATH SONG.
