Plot Synopsis

From early failures to recent breakthroughs in technology and design, this two-part series uses the Air and Space museum as a launching pad to explore the turbulent history of cars that fly with the help of wings, helicopter rotors, parachutes and pusher props. In the last 100 years, inventors have developed nearly 2,000 designs for a flying car -- with 300 designs that actually made it off the ground -- but none have commercially taken off yet. INCREDIBLE FLYING CARS travels around the world to highlight the latest and greatest flying cars and their inventors, including: garage inventors in Europe; a professor in Germany whose professional life is dedicated to the flying car; a Florida man whose car does 0-60 in 3.9 seconds and can fly for three hours without filling up; NASA engineers, who are developing an automated GPS flying program to manage airborne traffic; and European Union engineers developing myCopter, the next step in personal air transport, thanks to a $6.2 million investment by the EU; and many more people trying to turn the dreams of a flying car into reality.
