Plot Synopsis

LAVA CHASERS is a reality series that follows scientists, rangers and adventurers, who explore and celebrate Kilauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes, located on Hawaii's Big Island. This series of four, 30-minute episodes highlights these people: Dr. Ben Kennedy, who came to the Island from New Zealand to perform experiments that will help predict future eruptions; Native Hawaiian Tom 'Pohaku' Stone, who is trying to rekindle the ancient sport of rock sledding by building a 150-foot rock luge; the scientists at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO), who drive trucks through plumes of volcanic gas and trek across barren landscapes, searching for the newest flows; the rangers and officers at the Civil Defense and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, who are responsible for looking after the residents and helping the 100,000s of tourists visiting every year; photographer Brian Lowry, who has spent the last 22 years trying to capture the magic of the Hawaiian volcanoes and is still making the 25-mile hike through the lava fields on a weekly basis; and many others. The Weather Channel initially announced this series would premiere on Tuesday, March 26, 2013, but delayed its debut by 2-1/2 months.
