Plot Synopsis

Told through separate stories of its different family members, this half-hour comedy series centers on the Short family: matriarch Joan, who adores her family and would do absolutely anything for them -- as long she agrees with it; her husband, John, the gregarious patriarch who's going through a bit of a crisis as he turns 70 -- and searching for ways to spend more time with his family; their youngest child, Greg, and his wife, Jen, who found themselves overwhelmed and unprepared for the birth of their first child to start the series, but now again overwhelmed by the surprising news that they are pregnant with their second child as Greg finds himself suddenly unemployed; Heather, the eldest of the three siblings and a mother of three, and her husband, Tim, who is dreading her impending empty nest so much she's considering having another baby; and middle child Matt, who can't catch a break, the most recent being a failed career that has forced him back home with his parents, but has finally proposed to his new love, Colleen. The family's lives unfold in four short stories each week. Season 2 of LIFE IN PIECES premiered on Thursday, October 26, 2016 at 9:30pm ET/PT on CBS, with Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman guest starring as Clementine's Parents, Mary-Lynn and Spencer. In the season opener, "Annulled Roommate Pill Shower," Heather and Tim enlist Clementine's unusual parents, Mary-Lynn and Spencer, to help convince Clementine and Tyler to annul their unexpected marriage. Also, Tommy moves in with Colleen, to the chagrin of her roommate, Dougie; John and Joan run into "complications" after John takes the wrong dose of his daily pill; and Jen and Greg keep a secret from the family.
On Thursday, May 11, 2017 at 9:30pm ET/PT, CBS premiered the Season 2 finale of LIFE IN PIECES, with singer Richard Marx guest starring as Buddy Daiquiri, a charming hotel lounge singer. In the season ender, "Poison Fire Teats Universe," when Colleen and Matt miss all the flights to Mexico for their wedding, they question if they will ever get married. Also, Greg and Jen get into trouble when they share a cookie with a fellow plane passenger who has a severe allergic reaction to it, Joan and John rush their dog to the vet after he swallows Matt's wedding ring, and the Hughes family moves into Tyler and Clementine's tiny house when a fire breaks out in their kitchen. Two months earlier -- on March 23, 2017 -- CBS renewed LIFE IN PIECES for a third season.
