Plot Synopsis

This one-hour drama series explores the personal and professional life of maverick female Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord, as she drives international diplomacy, wrangles office politics and balances a complex family life. Elizabeth is married to Henry, a professor of medieval religious history, and they have three children: teenager Jason, a budding anarchist; his popular sister, Alison; and oldest daughter Stevie, who has returned home after dropping out of college. Elizabeth's staff, helmed by Chief of Staff Nadine Tolliver, includes: Blake, a young and loyal assistant, who is the only person on staff Elizabeth actually hired; speechwriter Matt; and press coordinator Daisy. Morgan Freeman is an executive producer of MADAM SECRETARY. This series premiered on Sunday, September 21, 2014 at 8:30pm ET/8pm PT.

MADAM SECRETARY returned for its second season on Sunday, October 4, 2015 at 8pm ET/PT on CBS. In the season opener, "The Show Must Go On," Elizabeth must take the oath of office when the President's plane disappears over the Pacific Ocean. Also, Henry is asked to recruit one of his Russian students to work for the U.S. government by Jane Fellows, his new Defense Intelligence Agency handler. Executive Producer Morgan Freeman directed the episode and guest stars as Chief Justice Frawley.

In the season opener, "Sea Change," when a storm destroys a naval base in Bahrain, Elizabeth urges President Dalton to reexamine his approach to climate change and his overall foreign policy, something that could jeopardize his re-election campaign. Also, Jose Campos tries to bring Henry back into the DIA fold, and the McCords worry that their family is being stalked when they discover Jason's laptop may have been hacked.

The fourth season of MADAM SECRETARY premiered on Sunday, October 8, 2017 at 10pm ET/PT on CBS, with Morgan Freeman returning as Chief Justice Wilbourne. Also, a "fake news" story surfaces claiming Elizabeth is responsible for the minister's death, and Dmitri returns to work with Henry.

In the season opener, "E Pluribus Unum," in the aftermath of a deadly attack on the White House, Elizabeth tries to keep a major nuclear disarmament deal from falling apart while a manhunt for the attackers brings D.C. to a halt. For advice, Elizabeth turns to former secretaries of state (guest starring as themselves) Madeleine Albright, Hillary Clinton and Colin Powell.
