Plot Synopsis

Hosted by Richard Blais, MAN VS. MASTER: CHEF BATTLE is a one-hour series that features unknown chefs who compete for the opportunity of a lifetime: a coveted apprenticeship with a world-renowned celebrity chef. But in order to win, they have to impress a judge/critic during a face-off against the master, which includes a rotating roster of chefs like Art Smith, Elizabeth Falkner, Jonathan Waxman, Ming Tsai and Rick Bayless. In the series opener, "In a Pickle: Art Smith," Oprah Winfrey's former chef, Art Smith, challenges three potential proteges -- Chef Geter, Chef Georgeanne and Chef Nick -- to get creative with ancient grains and tests their technique with quick pickling. Before the war is over, food critic Bill Esparza determines which chef has what it takes to beat out the master himself, in a final cooking challenge.
