Plot Synopsis

Clark Gregg reprises his role of Agent Phil Coulson from Marvel's feature films. Coulson, who died in THE AVENGERS, is resurrected for this series, and now he's assembled a small, highly select group of Agents from the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division (S.H.I.E.L.D.). Together, they investigate the new, the strange, and the unknown across the globe, protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary. Coulson's team consists of: Agent Grant Ward, a physical specimen, who is highly trained in combat and espionage, but sometimes botches interpersonal relations; Agent Melinda May, an ace pilot and martial artist, who is soulful and slightly damaged by her combat experiences, but will always go beyond the call of duty; Agent Leo Fitz, a brilliant engineer; Agent Jemma Simmons, a genius bio-chemist; and new recruit Skye, a computer hacker, who is slightly obsessed with superhero culture. MARVEL'S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. debuted on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at 8pm ET/PT on ABC, with the story beginning just after the Battle of New York, as the world is trying to come to grips with the existence of super heroes and aliens. This series was created for ABC by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. returned for its second season on Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at 9pm ET/PT on ABC. At the end of Season 1, Coulson was appointed as Director and tasked with rebuilding the agency after he led the charge to thwart HYDRA's takeover attempt. Now, in the Season 2 opener, "Shadows," Coulson and his team are wanted fugitives with limited resources -- but that's not stopping them from keeping the world safe from powerful and unseen threats everywhere. With Agent Ward, a former HYDRA mole, still on the team and with new members like mercenary sharp shooter Lance Hunter, can Coulson make S.H.I.E.L.D. trustworthy again? Season 3 of S.H.I.E.L.D. -- which premiered on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at 9pm ET/PT on ABC -- introduces new friends and foes inspired by the "Secret Warriors" comic series. In the aftermath of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s battle with Jiaying and the Inhumans, Director Coulson searches the world for more powered people and assembles an extraordinary new team to deal with threats unlike the world has ever seen. However, the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. soon find out they're not the only ones tracking down these new Inhumans. In the season opener, "Laws of Nature," when Coulson and the team discover a new Inhuman, S.H.I.E.L.D. comes face to face with another organization searching for powered people. And still reeling from Simmons' dramatic disappearance, Fitz goes to extreme lengths to try to learn how to get her back. Season 4 of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiered on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 in an all-new time period -- 10-11pm ET/PT -- on ABC. In the aftermath of their journey to another planet, Director Phil Coulson and the rest of the team were driven more than ever to put an end to the Hydra organization. Little did they know that they were up against the deadliest threat they've ever faced -- an extremely powerful Inhuman, Hive, who was transported back from Maveth in the body of their worst enemy, Grant Ward. The team was able to thwart and kill Hive and take down Hydra, but they are all still mourning the death of fellow agent and Inhuman Lincoln Campbell. In light of the Sokovia Accords, and with Hydra obliterated, S.H.I.E.L.D. has been legitimatized again and no longer needs to operate in the shadows. Since the world presumes that Coulson is dead, the organization needed a new Director to be the face of the organization. Coulson finds himself back in the role as an agent and teamed with Mack, and together they are tasked with tracking down and confirming the presence of Enhanced people, aka Inhumans. Agent May is tasked with training specialist strike teams, and Fitz and Simmons have taken a big step forward in their relationship. In the season opener, "The Ghost," Ghost Rider is coming, and S.H.I.E.L.D. will never be the same. On Friday, December 1, 2017 from 8-10pm ET/PT, ABC premiered the fifth season of S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Coulson and the team escaped LMD Aida's Framework and awakened in the real world. Little did they know that Aida was now fully human -- and with multiple Inhuman abilities -- with the dangerous notion that, with Fitz by her side, she could change the world. After defeating her with the aid of Ghost Rider, the team went out for a celebration but were interrupted by a mysterious man who rendered them frozen. The next thing we see is Coulson onboard a ship...in space. Coulson will discover that some, but not all, of his S.H.I.E.L.D. colleagues were taken with him and placed onboard the ship. As they come in contact with some of the vessel's inhabitants, it becomes abundantly clear that something has gone terribly awry, and the team will need to figure out their role and delve deeper into this nightmarish mystery to try to right what has gone incredibly wrong. In the two-hour season opener, "Orientation," Coulson and the team find themselves stranded on a mysterious ship in outer space, and that's just the beginning of the nightmare to come.

Tonight (Friday, December 15, 2017) at 9pm ET/PT, ABC premieres "A Life Earned," a new episode of S.H.I.E.L.D., as Coulson and the team discover what their captors' true intentions are; and in space, escape is not an option.
