Plot Synopsis

MATADOR is a one-hour spy series that follows Tony 'Matador' Bravo, a DEA agent recruited by the CIA to become a pro soccer player for the LA Riot so he can infiltrate the life of billionaire team owner Andres Galan, who is suspected of illegally using his network of communications satellites. But, in balancing life with his new teammates, his family and the truth, he's forced to confront the question of his real identity...and it is this mission which proves to be his most dangerous. Tony was recruited by Annie Mason, the analytical and beautiful head of a little known branch of the CIA, who, as his control agent, supervises his efforts to burrow into the secret life of Galan and arranges his fame and notoriety so he can access powerful circles of corruption and villainy. She and her brilliant partner, Neil Hopkins, arrange a tryout for Tony with the LA Riot, where he earns his 'Matador' nickname after he takes out the Riot's best player, Gregor 'The Bull' Zupan, leaving the team's defender hospitalized and out for the season. The Riot's billionaire owner, Andres Galan, immediately sees a star in the making and signs Tony, having no idea that his new player is an undercover agent who will infiltrate his exclusive world, where he's a member of an elite group of powerful global players and ruthless individuals who can impact world events. Andres' celebutante daughter, Senna, often gets herself in trouble with the team's players, and, as part of her idea of good dirty fun, she arranges to be "rescued" from an apparent rape by Tony. While playing for the Riot, Tony is teammates with: Alec Holester, the past-his-prime English striker who scored eight goals in the last World Cup and is wryly amused by his own talent for living in the limelight with a girl on each arm; Caesar Arguello, a baby-faced former dancer, who is the sole proponent of the art of soccer and whose sensitivity incites a surprising, forbidden romance; Duquesne Storm, the Riot's powerhouse goalie; Ernest MacDonald, the ornery head coach, who's under intense pressure from Andres to have a series of unbroken victories; Didi Akinyele, the wise assistant coach, who gives philosophical instructions to the new recruits during their tryouts for the team; and Reyna Flores, a sideline journalist and former college player, who reports on Tony's rise to sudden fame and is as passionate about her career trajectory as she is about the Beautiful Game. Tony's family includes: mother Maritza, a homemaker, who's been married to her second husband, Javi, for 20 years and is proud of Tony despite his dangerous profession; stepfather Javi, who married Maritza after the death of Tony's biological father and has been a loving husband and a good father all his life; younger half-brother Ricky, who is everyone's favorite punching bag in prison -- until he gets sprung as part of the deal offered to Tony by Annie and Noah; teenage half-sister Cristina, who still lives with her parents in Boyle Heights and has boundless energy; and childhood best friend Karen Morales, who Maritza sees as Tony's future wife.
