Plot Synopsis

Hosted by Teddy Wilson, MIGHTY TRAINS is a one-hour series that explores the world of rail travel, telling the stories of trains and their scenic locomotive routes through various parts of the world. Wilson follows the inner workings of these unique rail journeys with immersive and in-depth accounts from train drivers, load-masters, head chefs, track inspectors, rail traffic control officers, and passengers. MIGHTY TRAINS had its U.S. premiere on Sunday, September 10, 2017 at 9pm ET/PT on Smithsonian Channel.

On Sunday, July 14, 2019 at 9pm ET/PT, Smithsonian Channel debuted the U.S. premiere of the second season of MIGHTY TRAINS. The season opener, "KiwiRail," follows the KiwiRail's scenic journeys through New Zealand may appear serene to passengers, but to the conductors and engineers who keep these tour trains running, it takes hard work and nerves of steel. Embark on two odysseys through the country's northern and southern islands, past treacherous fault lines, active volcanoes, and dizzying heights. Visit epic landscapes, including "Hobbiton", home to the LORD OF THE RINGS and HOBBIT movies, as well as the site of the most devastating rail disaster in New Zealand's history.

Smithsonian Channel premiered "AVE 103," the Season 2 finale of MIGHTY TRAINS, on Sunday, August 18, 2019 at 9pm ET/PT. The AVE 103 is the speed demon of Spain, racing passengers 386 miles from Madrid to Barcelona in just two and a half hours. But traveling at such high speeds also means high risks. Discover one of the fastest trains on Earth and the cutting-edge technology required to keep it running on time. Meet the men and women working on the front lines and see how they respond when a heavy snowstorm threatens to compromise the brake system, which could bring this ride to a grinding halt.
