Plot Synopsis

MRS. AMERICA tells the story of the movement to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), and the unexpected backlash led by a conservative woman named Phyllis Schlafly, aka "the sweetheart of the silent majority." Through the eyes of the women of the era -- both Schlafly and second wave feminists Gloria Steinem, Betty Friedan, Shirley Chisholm, Bella Abzug and Jill Ruckelshaus -- the series explores how one of the toughest battlegrounds in the culture wars of the '70s helped give rise to the Moral Majority and forever shifted the political landscape. The series opens with Schlafly considering another run for Congress, amid the women's movement's push to pass the ERA. While Schlafly mobilizes grassroots support in her fight against the ERA, Steinem fends off Abzug's attempts to drag her further into the political game. Then, Chisholm makes an historic run for President, while Steinem struggles to play politics at the DNC; meanwhile, Schlafly takes her new anti-ERA organization national. On Wednesday, April 15, 2020 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT, Hulu released the first three episodes of MRS. AMERICA. A new episodes debuted each subsequent Wednesday through May 27.
On Wednesday, May 27, 2020, Hulu released "Reagan," the finale of MRS. AMERICA. Gloria, Bella and Jill put pressure on the White House to act on their proposals from the National Women's Conference. Phyllis prepares to leverage her political victories as the 1980 presidential election draws near.
