Plot Synopsis

This scripted crime drama reveals the killer and the victim at the beginning of each episode, and then follows Det. Angie Flynn and her team as they investigate, explore and deduce the reasons the murderer committed the crime. Angie is a single mother with a disarming, street-smart attitude, who doesn't suffer fools or authority and only wants the best for her teenage son, Manny. Her partner, Detective Oscar Vega, is intelligent, thoughtful, and methodical, and comes from money and privilege, with an Ivy League education and parents who are a wealthy industrialist and a neurosurgeon. Rounding out the homicide team are: Dr. Betty Rogers, a medical examiner with a quirky sense of humor that belies the grimness of her daily job; Staff Sergeant Boyd Bloom, the Squad Room Supervisor, who was sidelined from the streets a few years earlier by a bullet; and Detective Brian Lucas, a young detective who is eager to learn from the best and is fascinated about the often grisly procedures. MOTIVE had its U.S. debut on Monday, May 20, 2013 at 10pm ET/PT on ABC, billed as a sneak-peek episode on the network's consumer site, followed three days later by the official U.S. series premiere on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at 9pm ET/PT, the show's regular timeslot for its American broadcast. MOTIVE returned for its second season on March, 6, 2014 on CTV, and ABC aired the U.S. premiere of Season 2 nearly 2.5 months later on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at 10pm ET/PT. In Season 2, homicide detective Angie Flynn is as determined as ever, and her pursuit for justice never falters. Her partner, Detective Oscar Vega, continues to be her rock with his no-nonsense attitude and methodical approach. Detective Brian Lucas is no longer the rookie at the station, a role he's happy to hand over to the very keen and ambitious Officer Wendy Sung. And confident and charismatic new Team Commander Sergeant Mark Cross shakes up the station when he joins the team. He and Angie share a mysterious and strained connection, one she would prefer to leave in the past. The tension leads to a breakdown in trust between Angie and Vega, and Angie realizes she must find a way to work with Cross, even if it means confronting the truth and the secret that drove them apart years ago. USA Network aired the U.S. premiere of the third season of MOTIVE on Friday, April 1, 2016 at 10pm ET/PT. At the end of Season 2, Angie was telling Oscar that she didn't think she could work in Homicide anymore. The case in the Season 3 opener picks up six months later, and Angie has a new job in the police department's recruiting department. When Vega gets to the scene of the crime, he notices that his own father's phone number is in London Montgomery's cell phone history, so he feels that he needs to take a step back from the case due to the obvious conflict of interest. Without Vega working the case, it's imperative to recruit Angie back into the game, and after some prodding from the boss, Angie returns to her first case in six months. On Sunday, July 3, 2016 at 10pm ET/PT, USA Network aired the U.S. premiere of the fourth and finale season of MOTIVE. In the season opener, "The Vanishing Policeman," the work dynamic changes between Angie and newly minted Staff Sergeant Vega, as they pursue a cop killer.

In the series ender, "We'll Always Have Homicide," the whole team reunites when, three years after Judge Natalie Rodman's killer escaped, evidence in a recent homicide reveals the murderer may have resurfaced.
