Plot Synopsis

MOUNTAIN MONSTERS is a reality series that follows the good 'ol boys of Appalachian Investigators of Mysterious Sightings (AIMS), as these hardcore hunters and trappers investigate sightings of mysterious monsters in the Appalachian Regions. After investigating these eyewitness reports, the group tracks and then tries to trap and capture these creatures. AIMS was founded by Trapper John Tice, Jeff Headlee and Willy McQuillian, who all appear in this series, and they're joined by Wild Bill and rookie Buck. In each 60-minute episode, AIMS investigates one monster, including: a 500-pound Wolfman that is terrorizing Wolfe County, KY; the Ohio Grassman -- a 1,000-pound, 8-foot tall cousin of the legendary Sasquatch -- in Southeastern Ohio; the Devil Dog, which is wreaking havoc on the coyote population in Logan County, WV; and many more Appalachian creatures like Wampus Beast, Mothman, and Lizard Demon. MOUNTAIN MONSTERS returned for a new season -- called Season 2 in press materials but Season 1b on Destination America's online TV schedule -- at 10pm ET/PT on Friday, April 4, 2014. In the first of 14 all-new episodes, the AIMS team travels to Pike County, KY, to investigate a huge canine predator who is menacing the local farming community. The team meets with eyewitnesses and races to construct a giant bamboo box trap before the creature migrates for the winter. Monsters featured in subsequent episodes of the new season include the Grafton Monster of Taylor County (WV), the Yahoo of Nicholas County (WV), Werewolf of Webster County (WV), Fire Dragon of Pocahontas County (WV), Sheepsquatch of Boone County (WV), Shadow Creature of Braxton County (WV), Hogzilla of Hocking Hills (OH), Death Cat of Cherokee County (GA), Bear Beast of Raleigh County (WV), Snallygaster of Preston County (WV), Cave Creature of Greenbrier County (WV), and Bloodless Howler of Harrison County (WV).

MOUNTAIN MONSTERS returned for a new season on Destination America on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at 10pm ET/PT, with the first eight episodes of Season 2. The second half of the 16-episode season premiered later in 2015. In the season opener, "Bigfoot of Central Kentucky," AIMS begins its epic quest to prove the existence of Bigfoot in Appalachia. AIMS believes that central Kentucky's clan of Midnight Whistlers -- enormous ape-like monsters known for their ear-piercing whistle, green eyes, jet-black hair, and nocturnal behavior -- were the first variation of Bigfoot to emerge from the Mammoth Cave system some 3,000 years ago. The AIMS team goes hot on the trail of one Midnight Whistler after discovering the most elaborate and massive nest they've seen to date and must construct a customized trap large enough to contain this 8-foot tall monster. Little does AIMS know that where there's one Midnight Whistler, others are not far behind. On Saturday, April 16, 2016 at 10pm ET/PT, Destination America premiered the season finale of MOUNTAIN MONSTERS, immediately following an all-day marathon (9am-10pm) or encore episodes.

Season 3 of MOUNTAIN MONSTERS premiered on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at 10pm ET/PT on Destination America. In the special two-part premiere airing Saturday, April 8 and Saturday, April 15, after nine months of radio silence from the enigmatic "Rogue Team" - a shadowy foe that has been relentlessly thwarting AIMS' investigations for years - youngest AIMS team member Buck takes matters into his own hands to get answers once and for all. Buck's bold actions cause a rift among his mountain brothers Trapper, Willy, Jeff, Huckleberry, and Wild Bill as they weigh their own personal safety against a chance to lure the Rogue Team out from the shadows. While tensions rise, a whole new mission awaits AIMS in a dark place they have been before, a place they fear with new questions, mysteries, and monsters. AIMS' new journey begins in the episode airing Saturday, April 22 as they travel to Lee County, VA. Despite attempting to ease into the investigation, danger finds them quickly as the forest's evil forces wake up to their arrival and target Jeff. There's more supernatural warfare ahead than the team had bargained for, but will they rise to complete the quest?

After a two-year break, MOUNTAIN MONSTERS returned for its fourth season on a new network, Travel Channel, on Wednesday, August 21, 2019 from 9-11pm ET/PT. In the two-hour season premiere, the series picks up right where it left off -- with team members Trapper, Buck, Huckleberry, Jeff, Willy and Wild Bill entangled in the backwoods of the Dark Forest. Later in the episode, the clock fast-forwards 18 months to when the group reunites, visibly shaken, but still determined to finish their initial quest. The additional nine one-hour episodes of the season, airing on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT, run full-steam ahead towards a new raucous adventure, with the AIMS team chasing seven monsters deeply rooted in folklore and somehow connected to the greatest creature of all: Spearfinger. With trapping Spearfinger as its final goal, the team must first look for the Waya Woman, the Cherokee Devil, the Raven Mocker, the Silver Giant, the Cherokee Death Cat and the Coyote King. Each monster is more treacherous than the last, and the team members must rely on their trust in one another, expert knowledge of the terrain and the bond of their brotherhood to sustain the hunt. The grueling work, terrifying encounters and daunting setbacks that come with hunting monsters only inspires the team members to push forward knowing that if they stay together as a unit, they are sure to solve the mysteries of the mountains.

MOUNTAIN MONSTERS returned for its fifth season on Sunday, January 10, 2021. discovery+ released "The Wolves of West Virginia" at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT. Later that day, Travel Channel debuted the same episode at 10pm ET/PT, which listed the program as the Season 5 premiere (and a discovery+ 1st Look) on the cable channel's consumer site. In this episode, "The Wolves of West Virginia," the surviving members of AIMS head out on a brand-new adventure that team leader Trapper set up for them before he passed.
