Plot Synopsis
Inspired by the 2005 memoir, "Mozart in the Jungle: Sex, Drugs, and Classical Music," from professional oboist Blair Tindall, this half-hour drama/comedy series focuses on people in very different stages of their careers in the NYC classical music scene: a young upstart oboist Hailey; veteran conductor Thomas, who feels threatened by a brash new maestro, Rodrigo; a worldly cellist named Cynthia; and Gloria, the Chairwoman of the Board of the symphony. Hailey's journey begins when Rodrigo insists that she play with the orchestra, over the objections of Gloria. But after being humiliated by Rodrigo's assistant, Hailey lets off a lifetime of steam and must figure out an easy way to make money, with the help of Alex, an ambitious dancer. Meanwhile, Rodrigo and Thomas try to best each other, with Thomas trying to rise above Rodrigo's resentment, while Rodrigo pushes the orchestra so hard that a musician collapses. The crescendo of tension between the maestros hits a high note when Rodrigo is initially a no-show at a fundraiser, so Thomas steps in -- only to be upstaged by Rodrigo, who wows the crowd with his mid-performance arrival. When Thomas leaves for his sabbatical, the pressure mounts on Rodrigo and he erupts, causing concern with Gloria and the symphony's business adviser. Will Rodrigo, Hailey, and the rest of the orchestra be ready by opening night? Amazon originally released the pilot on February 6, 2014, and then debuted the entire 10-episode first season on Tuesday, December 23, 2014. On Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT, Amazon released the entire 10-episode second season of MOZART IN THE JUNGLE. To the outside world, Rodrigo's tenure as the new maestro is a roaring success, but the conductor is having doubts. Despite months of rehearsal, the orchestra's growth has stalled. A world tour and illicit romances dog the symphony, especially Rodrigo, anxious about his Mexican homecoming. Meanwhile, Hailey works to replace herself as Rodrigo's assistant so she can focus on her new position as substitute in the oboe section. Cynthia meets the orchestra's take-no-prisoners lawyer. Then, a near disaster during a live performance forces Rodrigo to make some changes in how he conducts not only himself, but his orchestra. Gloria extends an unusual invitation to Hailey. But, as the young oboist will soon find out, there is no such thing as free dinner. To top it off, a looming labor strike risks pitting friend against friend -- and it may fall to Rodrigo to create harmony. Guest stars in Season 2 include: Dermot Mulroney as guest cellist Andrew Walsh, Gretchen Mol, and Esai Morales. Season 3 of MOZART IN THE JUNGLE premiered on Friday, December 9, 2016 at 3:01am ET/12:01am PT. The third season opens in the midst of a grand Italian adventure. Rodrigo takes on a brand new artistic challenge: conducting the great opera diva Alessandra in her long-awaited return concert in Venice, Italy. He's swept up in the city, communing with its rich musical history as Alessandra pulls him into a passionate collaboration that quickly becomes operatic in its own right. Hailey travels across Europe with the Andrew Walsh Ensemble, finding it's not everything that she'd hoped -- but discovering a passion for conducting along the way. During the months since the lockout, the symphony has been torn apart. Many of the players can't be in the same room as each other and tense negotiations have become personal for Cynthia and Gloria. The musicians are challenged to become individuals again, confronting life without their orchestra family at the center.
