Plot Synopsis

Each year from 1992-2016, MTV honored the best in film from the past year, expanding the event in 2017 to include both film and television. By combining live musical performances, prerecorded comedy sketches, film parodies and watercooler-worthy on-stage moments, this awards show has become Hollywood's anti-Oscars. Categories for the MTV MOVIE AWARDS included: Best Movie; Best Male Performance; Best Female Performance; Best Breakthrough Performance; Best Line from a Movie; Best Villain; Best Comedic Performance; Best Kiss; Best Fight; Best Jaw Dropping Moment; Best Scared-As-S**t Performance; and Biggest Badass Star. In 2017 for the 26th annual event, MTV expanded the MTV MOVIE AWARDS to include television, renaming the event the MTV MOVIE & TV AWARDS. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was no awards show in 2020.

The 2023 MTV MOVIE & TV AWARDS premiered on Sunday, May 7, 2023 from 8-10pm ET/5-7pm PT on MTV with a simulcast on VH1, BET, MTV2, CMT, Logo, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, Paramount, Logo, Pop, and BET Her. Because of the Writers Guild of America strike, host Drew Barrymore, presenters, and guests announced they would not attend in solidarity with the writers. Instead of being a live ceremony, MTV aired the event as a pre-taped broadcast.
