Plot Synopsis
Each year since 1990, the Canadian music channel MuchMusic has honored the best music videos with an irreverent award show that focuses on the fans, by giving them the chance to be as close as possible to their favorite artists. Starting as the Canadian Music Video Awards, the first program was broadcast live from Halifax, Nova Scotia -- with a crowd of 4,500 people -- after an eight-car train took the MuchMusic crew from Vancouver to Halifax over a three-week, transcontinental tour. Winners of the first annual awards included: Cowboy Junkies' "Sun Comes Up, It's Tuesday Morning" (Best Video); Maestro Fresh Wes' "Let Your Backbone Slide" (Most Popular Video; Best Rap Video); Devon's "Mr. Metro" (Best R&B/Soul Video); Mitsou's "Bye Bye Mon Cowboy" (Best Dance Video); Sons of Freedom's "Mona Lisa" (Best Alternative Video); Lee Aaron's "Watcha Do to My Body" (Best Heavy Metal Video); and K.D. Lang's "Trail of Broken Hearts" (Best Country Video). For the second annual award show, MuchMusic moved the event to its headquarters in Toronto, where it has been held every year, except for 2001 when the event was canceled following the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States. Following the cancellation of the 12th Annual awards, the MMVAs moved from Thursdays during late September to Sundays in the middle June, where this unconventional awards show has been held ever since. Until recently, the MMVAs had no host, no podiums and no scripted dialogue, with live performances on multiple stages, making this award show one of the most unconventional -- and sought after tickets -- in the music industry. In 2010, Fuse first simulcast the MMVAs, allowing music lovers in the United States to experience Canada's most outrageous award shows.
