Plot Synopsis

Using NASA footage and interviews with astronauts and scientists, NASA'S UNEXPLAINED FILES explores strange findings by astronauts, satellites, landers, and rovers. Science Channel first aired NASA'S UNEXPLAINED FILES as a one-hour special on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at 10pm ET/PT, two years before showing two new episodes during the cable channel's ARE WE ALONE? week in 2014, marking the series premiere, followed by more special in March 2014. The 2012 special chronicled strange flying objects caught on NASA's cameras and UFO sightings reported by astronauts. In the first episode of 2014, astronaut Leroy Chao's spacewalk was interrupted by bright lights flying past. The second installment of 2014 documented NASA's mysterious Moon Pigeons, a Starship spotted in the Aurora Borealis, and the possibility that the Viking Lander may have found life on Mars. NASA'S UNEXPLAINED FILES returned for its second season on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at 9pm ET/PT on the Science Channel. In the season opener, "Hammer of Thor," NASA sends top scientists to Death Valley to examine strange happenings in the hottest place on Earth -- rocks weighing upwards of 700 pounds are moving across the desert without human intervention. Burning lights in the sky above the western U.S. spark fears the Department of Defense could be testing a highly classified space weapon system named after Thor. Additionally, scientists explore a mysterious planet that is 17 times the mass of Earth; a series of strange markings on the lunar surface that looks like footprints; a strange writhing shape in Earth orbit; and space slime. Season 3 of NASA'S UNEXPLAINED FILES premiered on Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at 10pm ET/PT on Science Channel. In the season opener, "Pluto Under Pressure," lost tapes reveal that Apollo astronauts heard unexplained transmissions on the far side of the moon, an amateur astronomer spots a strange disturbance in Martian atmosphere and an unidentified object in Earth orbit starts stalking Russian spacecraft.

Science Channel premiered the fourth season of NASA'S UNEXPLAINED FILES on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at 9pm ET/PT, immediately following an all-day marathon (3am-9pm) of encore episodes. In the season opener, "JFK UFO Conspiracy," a declassified letter written by President Kennedy demands that the CIA share its UFO data with NASA; a bizarre pattern on the surface of Mars could be a coded alien message; investigators find a rocket crash-landed in a crater on the Moon. Then at 10pm, Science Channel premiered a one-hour special, "Astronaut Mystery Special," that counts down the most narrow escapes, and the strange, unexplainable and almost deadly phenomena astronauts face. Among the rest stories investigated this season are a space probe that picked up anomalies on the surface of Mars, the Soviet version of the American Space Shuttle, a radio signal picked up from beyond our solar system, and questions about the strength of Earth's magnetic field.
