Plot Synopsis

After her most recent breakup, a quirky elementary-school teacher moves out of her ex's apartment and moves in with three juvenile guys. Jess is unlucky-in-love but optimistic, and she moves in with: bartender Nick, who is a law-school dropout not living up to his potential -- both professionally and personally; beer-loving hunk Schmidt, who is a hustling young professional with a well-defined physique masking severe insecurities that manifest themselves in a number of OCD-like mannerisms and false bravado; and Winston, an intensely competitive former athlete who not only found true love with a former booty call, but landed a dream job. Rounding out the group is Jess' childhood best friend, CeCe, a model with a killer deadpan who ends up having an adventurous affair with Schmidt. Note: The character of Coach, a chubby personal trainer subletting a room from Winston, was one of the three roommates in the pilot, but Damon Wayans, Jr. was under contract for HAPPY ENDINGS on ABC and was replaced in the second episode by Morris, whose character returned from pursuing a basketball career overseas. In Season 2 Jess got laid off from her teaching job, re-evaluated her life and career, and made some dubious choices, like working alongside a jaded cocktail waitress, jumping into a sex-only relationship with a handsome lothario, and attempting to bond with her younger neighbors by using '80s humor. Also in the second season, Nick was dumbfounded when he got a visit from his future self, Winston answered to his disapproving mother and basketball star sister, and Schmidt panicked at the thought of getting old, becoming jealous when Cece started dating the anti-Schmidt. Toward the end of the second season, Jess and Nick started an awkward relationship after finally giving into to their mutual attraction and decided to take their relationship to the next level. Plus, Schmidt more desperately tried to win back Cece, finally being rewarded when she called off her wedding. FOX aired the Season 3 premiere of NEW GIRL on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at 9pm ET/PT, with Jess and Nick going all-in during the new season. Plus, Schmidt is finding it difficult to choose between Cece and Elizabeth, while Winston reconnects with Coach. NEW GIRL returned for its fourth season on Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at 9pm ET/PT. In the season opener, "The Last Wedding," the gang makes a pact at the last wedding of the summer: Each of them will get lucky by night's end. Jess sets her sights on the best man (guest star Reid Scott), who also has caught the eye of a beautiful scientist (guest star Jessica Biel). Meanwhile, Schmidt and Nick get an indecent proposal; Winston recovers from his police academy training; and Coach panics when he realizes he already has hooked up with every woman at the party. In Season 4, recurring guest stars include: Kaitlin Olson as Ashley, the fiance of Jess's dad Bob, who is Jess and Cece's onetime high school nemesis; Julian Morris as Ryan, the hunky teacher who replaces Jess in the classroom and to whom she is attracted even though she's his boss; and Erinn Hayes as Ruth, a trashy school nurse who has a fling with Coach. In the Season 4 finale, Coach prepares to move out of the loft, so Schmidt also decides to get rid of his non-essentials -- and in the process discovers what is truly important to him. Jess and Nick reminisce about their "sex mug" and wonder if they still have feelings for each other. NEW GIRL returned for its fifth season on Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at 8pm ET/PT on FOX. In the Season 5 opener, "Big Mama P," Cece and Schmidt ask Jess and Nick to be their Maid of Honor and Best Man, respectively, and their first task is to plan the engagement party. But when Jess invites Cece's mom to join in the celebration, Cece is forced to make a surprising announcement to Schmidt. Later in the season, actress Megan Fox guest stars in a recurring role, appearing in a multi-episode arc. Fox, who first appears in the sixth episode of the new season, plays Reagan, a gorgeous, straight-shooting pharmaceutical sales rep who comes to town on business and shakes things up in the loft when she rents out Jess' (series star Zooey Deschanel who in real life is on maternity leave) room while she is sequestered on jury duty. Season 6 of NEW GIRL premiered on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at 8:30pm ET/PT on FOX. In the season opener, "House Hunt," Jess tries anything and everything to get her mind off of Nick, who returns from his summer in New Orleans sooner than anticipated. Meanwhile, Schmidt and Cece struggle in the search for their first home and Winston deals with having a long-distance relationship with Aly (guest star Nasim Pedrad).
